Lunch Feb 16

1804 – Stephen Decatur leads a force of 80 marines in a raid of the pirate held USS Philadelphia during the First Barbary War. Yes you read that right, Pirates, Marines and 1804. A good read is “The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805“ by Richard Zacks (Check your local library or book store for ISBN: 978-1401308490).

Lunch – Feb 1st

Double header this week. For Thursday

1884 – The first volume of the Oxford English Dictionary (A – Ant), 23 years in the making. The story is oddly reminiscent of Apple. They started in a shed with a bunch of pigeon holes to place bits of paper when they decided existing dictionaries were inadequate. Really in an interesting read.

Come wish Chris well as he continues his career.
